"Almost Got 'im!" is a thoroughly enjoyable story that features just about all
the major characters in the Batman cast. They are used in a very effective and
funny manner, while completely avoiding being cheesy. And it offers a
fascinating and humorous look at these super villains on their down time. At the
end of the day, they are just like everybody else in how they bitch and moan
about the injustice in life--although their idea of what makes an injustice may
be vastly different than that of the average person.
"Almost Got 'im!" begins with a poker game. Since all we see at
first are just hands playing cards and moving chips around a board, it looks
like a regular game of poker--until we realize that the players of this
particular game are none other than Two-Face, The Penguin, Killer Croc, and The
Joker. It's a boys' night out for these super villains, at least until Poison
Ivy shows up and takes a chair. After Ivy calmly takes a few insults from Two-Face
("We used to date," she explains to Joker and Penguin), the conversation moves
on to their least favorite subject: Batman. All of the super villains have a
favorite Batman story to share, the theme of which is how they almost got him.
Poison Ivy starts off with how she almost got the Batman one Halloween night in
a poisoned pumpkin patch, but Batman's deft use of the Batmobile spoiled her
plans. Two-Face relates how he once had Batman tied to a giant penny, yet just
when he's about to flip the massive penny into the air via a forklift, he sees
Batman cutting himself free using Two-Face's very own coin! (Batman fans will
recognize the giant penny as a Batcave staple from the comics. Two-Face even
mentions that the police let Batman keep it afterwards).
Killer Croc tells a lame story about how he tried to kill Batman by throwing a
rock at him. When the other villains stare at him in disgust, he awkwardly adds,
"It was a big rock…" The Penguin tells of his encounter with the Dark Knight in
an aviary; where he strikes out at the Batman using various dangerous and exotic
birds. However, the Batman uses his ingenuity to outwit both the Penguin and his
fine-feathered friends. But leave it to the Joker to have the best Batman story.
Joker and Harley Quinn take over a late night talk show in Gotham City (in a
segment that's a wry homage to the Johnny Carson Show) with a very special guest:
Batman in the hot seat, literally. The Caped Crusader is strapped into an
electric chair where the voltage increases the more the audience laughs--and Joker
insures that they WILL laugh, since he's pumped the studio full with his
laughing gas. Although Batman managed to escape with the help of none other than
Catwoman, Joker's story is still not quite done. Even while he plays cards with
his fellow psychos, the next stage of his master plot against Batman is already
in effect. "There's more than one way to get someone," he gleefully says.
