Usually, when you have a strong female lead character in a cop series, it's just
a matter of time before she becomes the target for a bad guy. And while SVU is no
different in that regard, what's refreshing about "Stalked" is how this story
is handled. Although she finds herself in mortal
danger, at no time do the SVU writers ever treat Olivia Benson as a typical
damsel in distress. She's a resourceful NYPD detective who never loses her cool.
When the final confrontation between Olivia and her stalker comes, it's done
with intelligence, while still being both gripping and creepy at the same
time.
"Stalked" is a clever thriller that illustrates the twists and
turns that can be found in the typical SVU episode. The case starts out simply
enough, with a murder that leads to a suspect--a psychopath whose penchant is
bullying women into doing whatever he wants (which is generally dangerous and illegal
deeds), and if they dare defy him, he kills them. He is a cold-blooded monster
whose main weapon is terror, backed up by the threat of death, who
views women as merely objects to be used. Strong-willed Detective Olivia
Benson comes face to face with this predator in an intense scene in the SVU
interrogation room. But the SVU, not having
enough evidence to hold him at that time, has no choice but to let the suspect go. Unfortunately,
once they finally do get the evidence they need, this psycho is already on
the run, and now he's got Benson in his sights as his next victim.
