Melissa George (30 Days Of Night, Turistas) stars as Jess, the single mother of a little boy who’s autistic. Accepting an invitation from a friend named Greg to go sailing on his boat, Jess shows up looking very disoriented. After a brief chat with her on the dock, Victor, the sole crewmember on Greg’s sailboat, thinks Jess is just weird. Greg has also invited Downey and his wife Sally, two life-long friends who have brought along a surprise guest: Heather, a nice young woman whom Sally the matchmaker is hoping will click with Greg. But Greg is clearly more interested in Jess, despite her problems.
But this bunch soon runs into some problems of their own when the wind abruptly dies down for no reason. Greg has seen this happen before, but never so fast. He puts in a call to the Coast Guard, in the hopes that they might have an explanation for this phenomenon. However, communications are very bad, as an ominous gray cloud fills the skies. Greg’s radio picks up a distorted message of a panicked woman calling for help. Yet she won’t respond to Greg’s hails. A massive storm capsizes the boat; everyone is all right, huddled on the over-turned hull, save for Heather, who’s missing.
A passing ocean liner named the Aeolus saves them…or does it? When the
shipwrecked survivors board the ship, they find that it’s completely empty of
any life, even though its still running with power and even food left out on the
tables. And then things get really weird. Directed by Christopher Smith, Triangle
is a real mind-bending thriller that’s part horror, part science fiction. Smith
manages to develop a great, creepy atmosphere at the beginning, and when the main
storyline is fully revealed, it’s still very satisfying…and just as eerie. The
tension never let's up, even after the big reveal, and there are several more
twists to follow.
The script is tightly plotted, and pays attention to the little details. It’s just up to the viewer to pay close attention. And Smith even manages to pull off some truly ghastly moments--with one moment on a deck of the ship that’s so shocking that it easily puts so many of these so-called recent horror movies to shame. The entire cast is marvelous, and George is a stand out here in a role that requires some heavy duty acting on her part, and she pulls it off handily. Triangle is one of those masterful thrillers that’s so good, it made me want to watch it again right after I had seen it the first time. This one’s highly recommended.
